Important Course Revisions from Televised Sessions

Since the televised sessions were videotaped several years ago, there have been some important changes to the class from what may be described in the videotaped sessions. These changes are addressed below:

Use of Laulima in Place of WebCT Previously, students accessed the University of Hawai'i WebCT site for this distance-learning version of BIOL 100 to receive information about the class, find useful resources, communicate with the instructor, and take quizzes and examinations. However, because WebCT is no longer supported at the University of Hawai'i, Internet administration of courses will involve a new system, Laulima. Suffice it to say, Laulima will look different from WebCT and navigating through it will be different. Regardless, I will try to make all of the same resources available as provided with WebCT. But there will undoubtedly by some confusion as the televised lectures frequently refer to WebCT pages.

New Version of Textbook Since we last videotaped the televised sessions of BIOL 100, the textbook has been upgraded to a newer edition (now using 5th edition). For the most part, the basic content will be the same or very similar to what is described in the televised sessions. However, there are some changes to the organization on the newer edition. When there are significant discrepancies, I will explain the differences with postings on the Laulima site.

Homework Assignments There will not be any conventional homeworks assignments given. Think of your quizzes as being homework assignments.

BIOL 100 Lecture Outlines and Study Guides In the past, I put my lecture outlines together into a book that was sold at the bookstore. I no longer sell these outlines in the bookstore. Instead, I will provide individual downloadable pdf files for each lecture presentation on the class Laulima site. Since I write many of my quiz and exam questions from these outlines, it would be extremely useful to refer to them when studying!

Podcasts of Televised Sessions The televised sessions are available as podcasts (mp4 files) from the course Laulima site. These are not as good video quality as the actual televised sessions. But they are useful backups to missed sessions.

Internet Administration of BIOL 100 Using Laulima

This distance learning class will be administered using the UH Laulima system. I will use the course Laulima site to make general course announcements, administer quizzes and exams, and provide useful resources.

The BIOL 100 Laulima site for Spring 2012 is not yet active. It will become active at the beginning of the Spring 2012 semester.

When the Laulima site for BIOL 100 is active, use your Internet browser to navigate to the Laulima login portal at https://laulima.hawaii.edu/portal. Login using your MyUH username and password. Then select the BIOL 100 Laulima link "BIOL-100-0 [WIN.64140.SP12]" in horizontal blue bar at the top of your Laulima homepage. Once you have accessed the BIOL 100 Laulima site, be sure to read all of the announcements posted there. These announcements will be my way of communicating important information regarding the class. NOTE: you should plan on visiting the BIOL 100 Laulima site at least twice per week to stay current with course announcements, quizzes, and the latest course resources.

Your UH username and password are your keys to access UH online services such as email, Internet, and registration for classes (if you were able to register for this class online, then you already have a UH username and password). If you don't have a UH username and password, please click the link " How do I get a UH username? " and follow the instructions presented.
