BIOL 171 General Biology I Link for Fall 2008
Distance Learning Mode Biology 172 (CRN 62052) will be offered via Distance Learning during the Spring 2008 semester. The lectures will be televised via Olelo and the class will be administered using WebCT through the Internet. Students from neighbor islands may also register for this class. Televised Sessions One advantage in taking this class is that you may videotape the televised sessions and view them at your convenience. Another advantage is that you may review the tapes over and over again, a useful ability for comprehending difficult concepts and studying for exams. We will also arrange to air the televised sessions via streaming video over the Internet using the University of Hawai'i's Video On Demand (VOD) option. Finally, the lectures will also be available as videotapes or DVD's that may be checked out from the library.
WebCT Site The WebCT site will offer many useful resources, including downloadable lecture outlines and downloadble pdf versions of the PowerPoint slides from the WebCT site. I use the WebCT Bulletin Board to post course announcements and other esssential information regarding the course. You will also take your quizzes and exams on the WebCT site.
Prerequisite Information BIOL 172 requires you to have previously enrolled in BIOL 171 and 171L. But it is possible that you may encounter problems registering through the MyUH online registration system if you took BIOL 171/171L from a different UH campus or if your home campus is not Windward Community College. Please contact me via email (krupp@hawaii.edu)if you are having difficulties registering for BIOL 172.
Corequisite Information BIOL 172 requires concurrent enrollment in BIOL 172L (the companion lab course). This lab class is scheduled to meet at WCC on Friday afternoons (1:30-4:30 p.m.). Unfortunately, there are only 20 seats in this lab section. Consequently, you should register for both BIOL 172 & 172L as soon as possible when Spring 2008registration begins.
It is possible to register for BIOL 172L offered at a different campus and take BIOL 172 at WCC. But the UH registration system may or may not allow you to do this without a pre-requisite/co-requisite waiver (which I can process for you for BIOL 172 at WCC). If BIOL 172L is not available on your island this Spring (e.g., Kauai & Big Isle), please contact me (krupp@hawaii.edu) regarding a prerequisite/corequisite waiver and possible strategies to deal with the need to complete the BIOL 171L lab class.
How to Register You may register online using the UH Banner registration system. You will need a UH username and password to do so. If you don't have a UH username and password click here.
Payment of Fees WCC has gotten much stricter in regards to the timely payment of registration fees. Failure to pay these fees on time may result in your automatic disenrollment from the class. Please be mindful of these deadlines for WCC (they may be different on differnent campuses) and pay you fees ontime.
